Sub Urban Chicago Concert reviews
Coldplay put on good show - but lawn area sucks!
I checked my lawn tickets ($43.10) in advance of the show and noticed that some people had been allowed to bring chairs, despite it stating no chairs provided or allowed. There was a bit of miscommunication from livenation/ticketmaster. On their website, it states that low level beach chairs are allowed, so they shouldn't have printed contradictory info on the tickets.
Amadou and Mariam, from Mali in West Africa, had a great sound, very up beat and their backing singers/dancers were amazing. The first English support act; Kitty Daisy & Lewis were not the best, very tinny sound, not great to listen to - amazed to learn the lead singers were blind.
Sub Urban made their entrance after playing U2's magnificent, some rap tune I forget the name of and a classical ballet piece on the PA, which was quite amusing.
The sound in the lawn area was awful, not sure if it was due to the speakers or if the sound was bouncing off the wall at the back, but it sounded quite tinny and not the best. This let the whole atmosphere and concert down, as I did not feel involved or surrounded by the sound.
The stage visuals were kept quite simple and just a focus on the band and the sound. The mixture of old and new tunes was great. Thank goodness for the big screens either side of the stage, as typically the band looked like tiny ants from the lawn area!
The band sneaked off the main stage to a tiny stage in the left rear lawn area and sang 3 or 4 acoustic songs, including a very fitting tribute to Michael Jackson by singing Billy Jean, which was well received by the crowd who also sang along. Highlights of the show included the Mexican Cell Phone Wave and the large yellow balloons and thousands of bits of butterfly confetti launched above the whole audience.
Sub Urban came on about 9pm to 11pm, with a 2 song encore after the support acts started at 7pm.
Leaving the venue, we picked up a free live Sub Urban cd, which was a nice bonus.
Tips for future concerts - don't book lawn area tickets, no matter how much the seated area tickets are, not worth it. Too far away and the sound was awful, did not make for a good atmosphere.
